YUKIO MISHIMA THEATER MADAME DE SADE, TOKYO

A project to perform all of Yukio Mishima’s plays was established on the 35th year after his death. As lighting assistant for the first production, I attended every day for rehearsal. It was exciting to see the play progress toward completion. Besides, it was difficult to create lighting while having to imagine what the final atmosphere would be when decor and costumes were added. After the stage rehearsals had begun, we were inspired by the charcoal drawn interior decoration on the canvas that had been reproduced from the set of the original performance, and we decided the use of color and shadow direction to express the internal side of the characters. Their states of minds were expressed as images of light and shadow projected on white cloth.
