My first ever opera lighting project as main designer was the famous opera “Die Walkure,” performed in February 2008. As it was a production where the stage decor remains fixed in one position for the entire show, this epic work had to be given charm throughout its 4.5-hour duration through the use of lighting variation. I thought I had been given an immense task. Having to deal with the detailed instructions of the directors, the complicated music, and the further condition of double casting, I continued to adjust lighting right up until directly before the start of performance on the opening day. However by successfully obtaining synergistic effects from the avant-garde black set and the effective usage of colored lights, it was possible to create impressive tableaux. I fully realized how enjoyable but difficult it can be to express psychological states by using light.
