For several years now, Yokohama has been organising an end-of-year lighting event, but the organisers had intentionto expand the scope of the event for some time. The result was a month-long project made up of multiple installations in Yamashita Park—overlooking the bay—the adjacent avenue, and the Marine Tower. It expressed Yokohama’s past, present, and future through light and sound. In the past, the city had prospered thanks to the silk trade, represented by golden lights. Today, it attracts a wide range of people, represented by multicoloured illuminations. Innovative technologies and techniques were used to symbolise the potential for future development. The star attraction was a night-time show in the so-called Illumine Plaza, featuring lasers, beams, and coloured lights, like a dynamic aurora borealis. The lawn plaza area, named the Illumine Lounge, created a truly light-based experience with its illuminated furniture, DJs, and food trucks. A special version of the show was also produced on New Year’s Eve, filled with the lights of smartphones filming or taking photographs and selfies. The event helped to attract more curious visitors to the park on winter nights.
