Performed at the Suntory Hall, Tokyo, this “hall opera” was developed in the unique format of placing the orchestra with the opera on the stage. I worked as lighting assistant for the 2006 performance for which internationally famous directors and performers were invited. Through the play’s rehearsal, I was able to absorb a multiplicity of factors such as the intentions of the drama and the symbolism of props. With no decor changes, and amid the difficult but necessary conditions of considering the orchestra, I learned about light’s place in the integrated theatrical production alongside the performance, props, and music as one element of dramaturgy expression.
