The Mobilier National and Manufactures Nationales Des Gobelins, located in south-west Paris is currently undertaking the job of preserving, restoring and exhibiting its giant collection that originated from the Royal Gobelins Manufactory.
In 2009, a special exhibition was held of furniture works that comprised tapestries woven from sketches by famous artists of the early 20th century such as Dufy, Redon and so on. Rather than the chairs and folding screens being displayed as stand-alone objects, I attempted to recreate by lighting design the atmospheres of the places in which they were used. As such, I set my mind to reproducing the context with warm white lighting like in salons at that time, and creating brighter zones to suggest the focus of conversation. Here, I gained valuable experience in methods of directing light to accentuate the textures of the tapestries.
