EXHIBITION
"BRIDGET RILEY"

I handled the lighting for the solo exhibition of English artist Brigitte Riley, representative exponent of the op art movement that aimed for special effects through the principle of optical illusion. Intent on making the lighting that is as neutral as possible, the engineering side of me strove to bring out the visual effect of this original style. As a result of loyally being the engineer and keeping light levels to exhibition prescribed levels, the artist Ms. Riley complained it was too dark. Although the lighting was in compliance with the prescribed brightness decided by the art museum for preserving the works, Ms. Riley, creator and owner of the works said, “These are mine, so I’ll decide.” And with that, the brightness was increased. It was an encounter with a clash between the lighting standards of an art museum and the pursuit of ideal light for bringing out the appeal of the art.
