CITY CENTER,
ST ETIENNE

Saint-Etienne is located in the eastern midlands of France. Proceeding with various design strategies aimed at escaping its image as a former coal mining town, it is actively undertaking inner-city urban redevelopment projects. The proposal, which was selected by a competition, was a design to take wide open space so as to facilitate multipurpose utilization of the public plaza in front of the City Hall, and there was a challenge of setting lighting poles aside for this purpose.

I cooperated with the urban designer to create long-armed poles designed to be inserted under a row of spectacular trees in order to ensure sufficient lighting level to the entire open space and implement a tree up-light. On the other side, in collaboration with local industries still competent in artisan skills such as metalworkers and colored glass manufacturers, we realized another series of poles that would become icons. In the adjacent Dorian plaza, we suspended shade lamps that emitted a gentle glow, and fostered an at-home atmosphere. The open spaces, which had been just points to pass, were revived as places of solace for citizens.
