BHV MENS’ SHOP ENTRANCE, PARIS

Located in the fashionable Marais district of Paris, the men’s boutique of one of France’s most prominent department stores was to have an entrance located off-street in an inner court of a building of ordinary apartments. This posed a concern that no-one looking from the street would think that it was truly an entrance to the department store. And so, one day, a request came my way: “we want eye-grabbing lighting that will draw customers.” However, the budget, construction schedule as well as the onsite work had to be all minimal. I arranged lighting fixtures with masculine vivid lines expressing trendiness in a way that takes advantage of the central pillar, giving the effect of a curtain opening from there. And while emanating a bright mood, the lighting piques the curiosity of passers-by and entices them to venture into the inner court. Whether or not it is testimony to the success of this dynamic arrangement of crosscutting light across the ceiling, walls and height of the courtyard, but ever since, the entrance has always been busy.
