In Tokyo, Asakusa View Hotel Annex, for which I.C.O.N. created the exterior lighting, had some buzz in the press even before its opening. It is in the most "trendy" district of the Taisho period (a hundred years ago) in the history. For the facades of this Japanese Art Deco-style hotel, I.C.O.N. imagined several lighting scenarios linked to the seasons and events on the theme « show » - in particular kabuki and cinema - for example one of them is inspired by the kabuki curtain (with vertical black brick and green stripes). The scenarios are adapted precisely to local annual events blue color of a festival of this district. Moreover the colors are not just simple RGB (Red Green Blue) but the tones adjusted to the traditional colors.
To realize these concepts, a specific light fixture was selected and imported for their high efficiency and precision. They can even highlight the molding line at the very top of the facades. It is lit by a narrow beam called from the 2nd floor terrace (not by an LED strip added at the top, as many people could have believed).
Moreover, in order to reveal the place of the building in this historic and tourist district, its arcades are highlighted by small ceiling recessed spotlights shooting the ground. They are combined with wall sconces aimed at the bottom as well as the top, thus emphasizing not only the vault and the wooden ceiling but also the continuity of the arch.
In addition, Akari-Lisa Ishii designed a special wall bracket. Decorative and revealing the pedestrian level, it’s a landmark that expresses the style and class of the hotel. Inspired by Japanese Art Deco, it gives light to the stone facade.
