AKS-7 ANNEX, GUEST HOUSE, TOKYO

A guest house for a company was constructed in Asakusa, and I was appointed to handle the lighting. The concept was to create an environment where guests could dine while enjoying the scene of the garden, a remarkable thing for the middle of Tokyo. To bring this off, I thought it would be necessary to integrate the interior lighting the ceiling to prevent reflections on the glass, and to make the outside lighting brighter than inside so that the lit-up garden becomes the main feature. I gained the architect’s understanding, and all efforts were made to hide the interior lights. Coming through the entrance, our gaze is guided by the constrained but warm atmospheric light, then through the thin slab-and-glass structure and out onto the lit-up garden at the back. Naturally drawn toward the brightest point, we climb to the second floor, and peer through one pane of fixed glass like a Byōbu (Japanese screen) scenery made of light. That was the idea. Light is dimmed down once dinner has started so that the green of the garden can be extensively accentuated.
