A religious organization in Shiga prefecture asked us to produce a special two-night event for 6,000 believers from all over the world, selected through a lucky draw. We therefore researched the history and doctrine of the religion, which was founded around fifty years ago, as well as the collections of the adjoining Miho museum. The teachings of the founder of this congregation emphasize light, beauty, and nature. The aim was not only to illuminate the sacred site with celestial light, but also to create a 40-minute show (the longest of all our work to date) that would be interesting for a seated audience; with no performers or musicians, just light, sound, and images. During the preparations, the Covid-19 epidemic broke out, causing the project to be postponed for three years. The fact that the programme could be carefully put together during the lockdown period turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Through dynamic light movements and videos, we were able to express the energy developed in the past, the present, and for the future. These were complemented by various illusionist lighting effects and projections of the museum’s treasures. After heavy rain that miraculously stopped at the time of the show, the entire site was literally drowned under beams of light that seemed so surreal that their brilliance will surely remain engraved in the memory of all the spectators.
