KITAKYUSHU ART FESTIVAL IMAGINING OUR FUTURE ART FOR SDG'S

For 2020-2021, the City of Kitakyushu is named the Cultural Capital of East Asia, not least because of its leadership role in the ecological improvement of industrial cities. At this occasion, a festival based on SDG’s (17 Sustainability Development Goals) defined by the UN was organized and 27 artists were chosen by the famous artistic director Fumio Nanjo to create works in local museums, heritage sites, public spaces etc. Initially planned for 2020, the festival finally started on April 29, 2021 for 11 days.

Akari-Lisa Ishii exhibits “Light X (light cross)”, a new light artwork with sound on the furnace No. 1 in Higashida, an industrial heritage of the first industrialization of Japan. It expresses the history of Kita-Kyushu, industrial of course but going back to prehistoric times, then its initiative in the field of sustainable development and even its future. The 5-chapter show begins with a scene about terrestrial biodiversity, then the dawn of civilization, the blaze of technological development, the fight against pollution and ends with the 17 symbolic colors of the SDGs. The music composed by I.C.O.N. Music Label for the event is obviously adequate and reinforces the effect.

The current epidemic delayed the event and prevented the designer from coming to the site on the D-day, but thanks to meticulous preliminary inspection on site and to combination of several ingenious remote systems, she was able to make adjustments and difuse the work to the public, not only on site but also on the web.
