After five years, the construction of the Hekla Tower in La Défense is completed. I.C.O.N. created the lighting design of the balconies called « loggias » and the roof garden on the 43rd floor for this great architecture by Jean Nouvel.
It was a major project that required a lot of coordination and even the intervention of rope-access technician for the installation at extrem height. Despite its size and prestige, many ecological considerations were taken into account, for example, the exterior lighting is turned off at 11 p.m and zero light-pollution to the sky.
The roof-top is most impressive. This sky garden and its circulations required detailed studies. Indeed, the structures being built in multi-directions, we had to work on 3D models to choose the location of each spot and to check if its beam won’t be blocked by any obstacle, and also if level illumination was optimal. Thus the lighting designer had to group the devices on the vertical posts and shoot to cover a large space from each point. Depending on the objective and the distance, different optics were chosen. On the circulations was applied a lens to transform the beam to oval (to follow the narrow path better). This method was multiplied for several levels at the top of this architecture.
In addition, on the south side, the loggias are highlighted, creating a vertical line on the building. Their golden ceiling grids are enhanced with warm light that creates an impressive luminous spine for the tower when seen from the outside, crowned by the illuminated garden on its head.
