A British hat designer is set to hold his first solo exhibition in France. We secured our place through a competition. It would be no exaggeration to say this superstar handles the hats for brands representing the world's fashion elite. Mr. Jones, who always arrives at meetings and on-site visits with a splendid hat coordination, once remarked that had he not become a hat designer, he would have been a lighting designer – a statement reflecting his intense focus on light. He issues sharp and detailed instructions in fluent French. His collection of some 400 pieces, including nearly 200 hats, differing in style, material and colour, transcends the realm of mere headwear, resembling “sculptures for the head”. Within the spatial design for this high-ceilinged space, once an aristocratic mansion, where small objects needed to assert their presence, the role of lighting was significant. Two weeks were spent wrestling with the challenge of highlighting the specificities of each piece, densely displayed within the showcases, while maintaining overall harmony. The effort paid off, earning the exhibition the reputation of being a ‘beautiful display of light and shadow’.
