EXHIBITION
“PIERRE PAULIN“

I was contacted by Shigeru Ban who requested, “A retrospective exhibition of a famous French furniture designer is in preparation at the Ginza Chanel Nexus Hall. Lighting is going to be an important factor, so I really want your help.” When I heard the purpose of the curation, I realized it was not simply the exhibition of chairs, but rather to encounter the real chair for the first time after appreciating the abstract concept of “chair” and the form at the design stage.

In order to emphasize the non-materiality of introductory part and design stage various lighting expressions were investigated such as a symbolic crystal objet floating up to the light, and a corridor with chair silhouettes. In order to produce an exhibition design that would allow light and shadow to flourish, I made several requests to the architect from the perspective of the lighting design concerning the volume and form of the scenography design, as well as the material. This was all worth it, as the exhibition design produced mystical effects and the exhibition received rave reviews.
