BELGIAN BEER WORLD, BRUSSELS

The former Brussels Stock Exchange is an imposing historical building. Digital changes in the markets rendered this large hall obsolete, and it was renovated to become a museum of Belgium’s famous beers — more than 1,500 varieties — as part of the capital’s initiative to create a new tourist attraction. After winning the competition, our project took no less than eight years to complete due to a number of difficulties including the restoration work on the building, the conservation and display of archaeological remains excavated from the basement, the suspension of the exterior lighting for reasons relating to the council, changes in the members of the consortium, the venue’s closure during the Covid-19 pandemic, etc. A new experience for us, the project also encountered difficulties linked to the country’s many official languages, such as the need for bilingual translation into French and Dutch of all documents, and the coordination of discussions and protocols on the site in different languages. After all of these efforts, the concepts we initially had in mind were finally able to be put into practice; for example, accentuating the majestic main nave or highlighting, with a light touch, the structure on the roof as a metaphor for the head of a beer. While a birth is always painful, a rebirth is not a painless experience either!
